Judge Device Status Overview

Monitor all judge devices in real-time during your competition. The Device Status page shows connection status, battery levels, recording status, and alerts for each judge's device.

Accessing Device Status

  1. Navigate to your Organization
  2. Go to Events and select your event
  3. Select the Competition you want to monitor
  4. Click Tablets in the competition navigation menu

Understanding the Status Display

The Device Status page displays a table with each judge assigned to the competition. For each judge, you can see:

Column Description
Caption The judge's caption initials (e.g., GE, VIS, MUS)
Judge The judge's name
Device Device type and operating system version
Version The CompetitionSuite Judge app version
Battery Level Current battery percentage
Pending Upload Number of commentary files waiting to upload
Record Status Current recording state for commentary

Multiple Rounds

If your competition has multiple rounds, a sidebar appears on the left allowing you to switch between rounds. Your last-viewed round is remembered for future visits.

Status Indicators

Connection Status

The colored circle on the left of each device row indicates connection status:

Icon Meaning
Gray circle Device has never connected or is offline
Green circle Device is currently connected
Yellow circle Device has been idle (no recent activity)

Hover over the icon to see the last connection time for disconnected devices.

Battery Level

Battery levels use color-coding to quickly identify devices that may need attention:

Color Status Battery Level
Green Good 60% or higher
Yellow Caution 30% to 59%
Red Investigate Below 30%
Pink border Charging Device is plugged in

Pending Uploads (Commentary Only)

For judges assigned to record commentary, this shows how many audio files are waiting to upload:

Color Status Pending Files
Green Good 0-3 files
Yellow Caution 4-7 files
Red Investigate 8+ files

A high pending upload count may indicate network issues or that the judge's device is having trouble uploading files.

Recording Status (Commentary Only)

For judges with commentary assignments:

Icon Meaning
Red circle Currently recording
Pause icon Recording is paused
Small gray circle Not recording
Faded gray circle Status unknown (device disconnected)

Warnings and Errors

When a device has warnings or errors, an icon appears next to the device information:

  • Yellow warning triangle - Caution issues that should be addressed
  • Red exclamation circle - Critical issues requiring immediate attention

Click the icon to view details about the specific issues.

Common Warnings

  • Outdated app version - The judge is using an older version of the CompetitionSuite Judge app
  • Low disk space - Device has less than 200 MB of storage available

Common Errors

  • Microphone access denied - The app cannot record commentary because microphone permissions were denied
  • Storage access denied - The app cannot save recordings because storage permissions were denied
  • Extremely low disk space - Device has less than 50 MB of storage available

Troubleshooting

Device Shows as Disconnected

If a judge's device shows as disconnected:

  1. Verify the device has an active internet connection
  2. Check that the CompetitionSuite Judge app is open and logged in
  3. Have the judge close and reopen the app
  4. Verify the judge is logged into the correct account

High Pending Upload Count

If a judge has many pending uploads:

  1. Check the device's WiFi connection
  2. Move the judge closer to the WiFi router if possible
  3. Check if other devices are experiencing the same issue (may indicate network problems)
  4. Have the judge pause recording temporarily to allow uploads to complete

Battery Draining Quickly

If a judge's battery is draining quickly:

  1. Ensure the device is charging when possible
  2. Check if the device is recording continuously
  3. Consider having backup charging cables or battery packs available

Outdated App Version Warning

If a judge is running an old app version:

  1. Note the recommended version shown in the warning
  2. Have the judge update the app from the appropriate app store (Apple App Store, Google Play, or Amazon Appstore)
  3. Updates should be done before competition day when possible

Best Practices

  • Check device status before the competition starts to ensure all judges are connected and devices are charged
  • Monitor regularly during the event to catch issues early
  • Keep spare charging cables available for judges with low battery
  • Ensure strong WiFi coverage in judging areas to prevent upload issues
  • Update judge apps before competition day, not during events
  • Using the Judge App
  • Commentary Overview
  • Judge App Compatibility
  • Device and Microphone Recommendations
