Create a Scoring System

This guide walks you through creating a new scoring system for your organization.

Before You Begin

Ensure you have:

  • At least one Configuration set up (Settings > Configurations)
  • A clear understanding of your judging structure
  • Organization Setup access

Step 1: Navigate to Scoring Systems

  1. Go to your organization page
  2. Click Settings in the top navigation
  3. Click Scoring Systems in the left sidebar

Step 2: Create the Scoring System

  1. Find the configuration (group type) panel for your scoring system
  2. Click Create a Scoring System in the panel header
  3. Enter a descriptive Name (e.g., "Regional Championship 2024")
  4. Click Save to create the scoring system

Note: You must have at least one configuration to create a scoring system. If you see a message about missing configurations, go to Settings > Configurations first.

Step 3: Add Categories

Categories are the major judging areas. See Categories and Sections for details.

  1. In the scoring system modal, select the appropriate tab:
  • General Categories - For scores included before subtotal
  • After Subtotal Categories - For scores added after subtotal
  • Special Categories - For non-competitive feedback
  1. Click Add Category
  2. Enter the category Name (e.g., "Visual")
  3. Set the Multiplier and Divisor (default: 1/1 = no adjustment)
  4. Toggle Visible on Recap as needed
  5. Click Save

Step 4: Add Captions

Captions represent individual judge roles. See Captions for full details.

  1. Within a category, click Add Caption
  2. Enter the caption Name (e.g., "Visual Ensemble") and Initials (e.g., "VE")
  3. Configure judge settings:
  • Number of Judges - How many judges score this caption
  • Supports Multi-Panel - Enable if more than one judge can be assigned
  1. Click Save

Step 5: Add Subcaptions

Subcaptions are the individual scoring elements. See Subcaptions for details.

  1. Within a caption, click Add Subcaption
  2. Enter the subcaption Name (e.g., "Technique") and Initials (e.g., "T")
  3. Set the Maximum Score (e.g., 100)
  4. Adjust Multiplier and Divisor if needed
  5. Click Save

Step 6: Save the Scoring System

  1. Review your structure in the modal
  2. Check the calculated totals at the bottom of each section
  3. Click Save to finalize

Quick Setup Checklist

Component Required Fields Common Values
Category Name, Multiplier, Divisor "Visual", 1, 1
Caption Name, Initials, Number of Judges "Visual Ensemble", "VE", 1
Subcaption Name, Initials, Max Score "Technique", "T", 100

Example: Basic Three-Judge System

Here's a simple scoring system structure:

General Categories
└── Performance
    ├── Judge 1 (1 judge)
    │ ├── Content (Max: 50)
    │ └── Execution (Max: 50)
    ├── Judge 2 (1 judge)
    │ ├── Content (Max: 50)
    │ └── Execution (Max: 50)
    └── Judge 3 (1 judge)
        ├── Content (Max: 50)
        └── Execution (Max: 50)

Result: Each judge can award up to 100 points, for a maximum total of 300 points.

Cloning an Existing System

To save time, clone an existing scoring system:

  1. Click on an existing scoring system to open it
  2. Click the Clone button (bottom of modal)
  3. The new system opens with "Clone of [Name]" as the title
  4. Modify the name and make any needed changes
  5. Click Save

Cloning is especially useful for:

  • Creating year-over-year scoring systems with minor tweaks
  • Customizing shared scoring systems from other organizations
  • Testing changes without affecting the original

Tips for Success

  1. Start simple - Begin with basic categories and captions; add complexity later
  2. Use clear names - Judges and groups will see these labels on tablets and recaps
  3. Keep initials short - 2-4 characters work best for recap displays
  4. Test before events - Create a test event to verify calculations work as expected
  5. Document your system - Note any multipliers or special calculations for reference
