Scoring System Advanced Settings

The Advanced tab in your scoring system provides access to calculation methods, score adjustments, and display settings. These options affect how scores are calculated and what appears on recaps and summaries.

Accessing Advanced Settings

  1. Open your scoring system
  2. Click the Advanced tab

Score Calculation Settings

Multiplier, Divisor, and Addend

These values apply a final adjustment to the overall score:

Final Score = (Category Total × Multiplier ÷ Divisor) + Addend
Setting Default Use Case
Multiplier 1 Scale up the final score
Divisor 1 Scale down the final score
Addend 0 Add or subtract a fixed value

Example: Convert a 300-point system to display on a 100-point scale:

  • Multiplier: 1
  • Divisor: 3
  • Addend: 0

Result: A 270-point performance displays as 90.

Calculation Type

Choose how judge scores determine rankings:

Raw Score (Default)

Standard point accumulation where the highest total score wins.

  • Judges enter numeric scores
  • Scores are summed according to your category/caption structure
  • Highest total = 1st place

Best for: Most competition formats where points directly determine placement.

Borda Count

Rankings converted to points where rank position determines score contribution.

  • Judges' scores are converted to rankings (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)
  • Rankings receive points (e.g., 1st = n points, 2nd = n-1 points)
  • Point totals determine final placement

Best for: Subjective judging where relative rankings matter more than point differentials.

Ordinal Consensus

Rankings compared across judges to find majority placement.

  • Multiple judges' rankings are compared
  • System finds the placement where a majority of judges agree
  • Reduces impact of outlier judge rankings

Best for: Events with large judge panels where consensus matters.

Judge's Preference Tiebreaker

  • Yes - When scores are tied, break ties using judge ranking preferences
  • No - Ties remain unbroken

When enabled, the system looks at how judges ranked tied groups relative to each other to determine placement.

Low Score Wins

  • Yes - Lowest score places first (like golf)
  • No - Highest score places first (standard)

Use for scoring systems where lower numbers indicate better performance.

Score Display Settings

Control what appears on recaps and performance summaries for each round type (Prelims, Semifinals, Finals).

Understanding the Display Grid

The settings grid shows:

  • Rows: Different visibility options
  • Columns: Round types (Prelims, Semifinals, Finals)
  • Sub-columns: Recap | Performance Summary

Toggle each setting on/off independently for maximum flexibility.

Visibility Options

Score Visibility

Show or hide the actual numeric scores.

Ordinal Visibility

Show or hide placement rankings (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

Subcaption Visibility

Show or hide subcaption rows on recaps.

Subcaption Score Visibility

Show or hide individual subcaption scores (when subcaptions are visible).

Subcaption Rating Visibility

Show or hide rating text for subcaptions (when ratings are configured).

Judge Total Visibility

Show or hide the total score for each judge.

Judge Rating Visibility

Show or hide rating text for judge totals.

Caption Total Visibility

Show or hide the total score for each caption.

Subtotal Visibility

Show or hide the subtotal row.

Total Visibility

Show or hide the final total row.

Recap vs. Performance Summary

Display Description
Recap Full tabulation document showing all groups
Performance Summary Individual group's score breakdown

Configure each independently. For example:

  • Show ordinals on the Recap but hide them on Performance Summaries
  • Show detailed subcaption scores on Summaries but condensed view on Recaps

Recap Note

Add a text note that appears on all recaps generated from this scoring system.

Use for:

  • Explaining scoring methodology
  • Crediting the scoring system source
  • Adding disclaimers or clarifications

Common Configurations

Standard Competition

Calculation Type: Raw Score
Low Score Wins: No
Judge's Preference Tiebreaker: No
All visibility settings: Yes

Golf-Style Scoring

Calculation Type: Raw Score
Low Score Wins: Yes
Judge's Preference Tiebreaker: No

Ranked Judging with Tiebreaker

Calculation Type: Borda Count
Low Score Wins: No
Judge's Preference Tiebreaker: Yes

Condensed Public Recap

Recap Settings:
- Score Visibility: Yes
- Ordinal Visibility: Yes
- Subcaption Visibility: No
- Judge Total Visibility: No
- Caption Total Visibility: Yes
- Total Visibility: Yes

Performance Summary Settings:
- All settings: Yes

This shows totals on the main recap while giving groups full detail on their individual summaries.

Prelims vs. Finals Differentiation

Prelims:
- Ordinal Visibility: No (don't show placements)
- Score Visibility: Yes

Finals:
- Ordinal Visibility: Yes (reveal placements)
- Score Visibility: Yes

Understanding Calculation Types

Raw Score Example

Three groups judged by two judges:

Group Judge 1 Judge 2 Total Rank
A 85 88 173 2nd
B 90 87 177 1st
C 82 83 165 3rd

Borda Count Example

Same scores, converted to Borda points (3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd):

Group Judge 1 Rank Judge 2 Rank Borda Points Final Rank
A 2nd (2 pts) 1st (3 pts) 5 1st
B 1st (3 pts) 2nd (2 pts) 5 1st (tie)
C 3rd (1 pt) 3rd (1 pt) 2 3rd

With Judge's Preference Tiebreaker, the tie between A and B would be resolved based on head-to-head rankings.

Ordinal Consensus Example

Five judges rank three groups:

Group J1 J2 J3 J4 J5 Consensus
A 1 2 1 1 2 1st (3 votes for 1st)
B 2 1 2 2 1 2nd (3 votes for 2nd or better)
C 3 3 3 3 3 3rd (5 votes for 3rd or better)

The system looks for the highest placement where a majority of judges agree.

Best Practices

Choose Calculation Type Early

  • Changing calculation type after scores exist requires recalculation
  • Test with sample data before using at events

Be Consistent

  • Use the same visibility settings for similar round types
  • Document any differences between prelims/finals settings

Consider Your Audience

  • Full detail for coaches and directors
  • Condensed view for public spectators
  • Match display settings to what each audience needs

Test Before Events

  • Create a test event with sample scores
  • Generate recaps to verify display settings work as expected

Troubleshooting

Scores not calculating correctly

  • Check Multiplier/Divisor values at system level
  • Verify category and caption multiplier/divisor settings
  • Ensure calculation type matches your methodology

Tiebreaker not working

  • Enable "Judge's Preference Tiebreaker" in settings
  • Ensure ties exist at the level where tiebreaker applies

Missing recap elements

  • Review visibility settings for the specific round type
  • Ensure the setting is enabled for both Recap and/or Summary as needed

Ordinal Consensus producing unexpected results

  • Verify sufficient judge count for meaningful consensus
  • Review how each judge ranked the tied groups
