Custom Recap Columns

Custom recap columns let you add calculated fields, rankings, and translated values to your score recaps. This advanced feature enables sophisticated score displays beyond the standard category and caption totals.

When to Use Custom Columns

Custom columns are useful for:

  • Displaying subtotals of specific captions or subcaptions
  • Showing rankings based on particular score components
  • Converting scores to rating scales (e.g., numeric to letter grades)
  • Adding derived calculations to recaps

Note: The Custom Columns tab only appears after you've saved a scoring system at least once. Create your categories, captions, and subcaptions first, then add custom columns.

Column Positions

Custom columns can be placed at six positions on the recap:

Position Location Common Use
After Group Name Immediately after the group identifier Division, class, or category info
Before Subtotal After General Categories, before Subtotal Component scores
After Subtotal After Subtotal, before After Subtotal Categories Running totals
Before Total After all categories, before Total Penalty summaries
After Total After the Total score Final rankings, ratings
After Special Categories Very end of the recap Additional info, feedback ratings

Creating a Custom Column

  1. Open an existing scoring system (create and save it first if new)
  2. Click the Custom Columns tab
  3. Find the desired position section
  4. Click Create a Custom Column
  5. Configure the column settings (see below)
  6. Click Save

Column Settings

Basic Settings

Setting Description
Name Column header text (up to 50 characters)
Internal Notes Private notes about this column's purpose
Show on Recap Toggle visibility on/off

Composition Types

The composition type determines what data the column displays:

Composition Description Use Case
Final Score The group's final calculated score Display adjusted total
Final Rank Ranking based on final score Show overall placement
Subtotal Score Score before After Subtotal categories Mid-point totals
Subtotal Rank Ranking based on subtotal Subtotal placement
Caption Score Score from specific caption(s) Component breakdowns
Caption Rating Value Rating value from caption(s) Letter grades by caption
Subcaption Score Score from specific subcaption(s) Fine-grained breakdowns
Custom Column Value Value from another custom column Derived calculations
Custom Column Rank Ranking based on another column Secondary rankings
Custom Column Rating Value Rating value from another column Chained ratings

Calculation Types

When combining multiple captions or subcaptions, choose how to aggregate:

Calculation Description
Sum Add all selected values together
Average Calculate the mean of selected values
Maximum Use the highest value
Minimum Use the lowest value
Median Use the middle value

Multiplier and Divisor

Available for composition types that support calculations:

Display Value = (Composition Result) × Multiplier ÷ Divisor

Use these to scale the displayed value.

Translations

Translations convert numeric values into text or adjusted values. Three modes are available:

None

Display the raw calculated value with no translation.

Global Translation

Apply the same translation rules to all divisions.

Max Value Display Text Value Display to Announcer
60 Calculated Value No
70 Custom Text "Bronze" 1 Yes
80 Custom Text "Silver" 2 Yes
100 Custom Text "Gold" 3 Yes

With this translation, a score of 75 displays as "Silver" with a value of 2.

Per Division Translation

Apply different translation rules for each division. Useful when:

  • Different classes have different achievement thresholds
  • Divisions use different rating scales
  • Awards vary by competitive level

Selecting Captions/Subcaptions

For Caption Score, Subcaption Score, and related types:

  1. A tab appears showing all categories and their captions/subcaptions
  2. Toggle Include in Calculation for each item to include
  3. Set individual Multiplier, Divisor, and Addend values if needed

Example: Create a "Visual Total" column that sums Visual Ensemble and Visual Individual caption scores:

  1. Composition: Caption Score
  2. Calculation: Sum
  3. Toggle both Visual Ensemble and Visual Individual to "Yes"
  4. Save

Managing Custom Columns

Edit a Column

  1. Click the column name in the list
  2. Modify settings
  3. Click Save

Remove a Column

  1. Click the column name to open it
  2. Click Remove (bottom-left)
  3. Confirm the removal

Reorder Columns

Drag columns using the sort handle (three horizontal lines) to reorder within a position section.

Best Practices

Start Simple

  • Add custom columns only when standard recaps don't meet your needs
  • Test with a few columns before building complex configurations

Use Descriptive Names

  • Recap readers should understand what each column shows
  • "VE+VI Total" is clearer than "Column 1"

Document Your Logic

  • Use the Internal Notes field to explain complex calculations
  • Future administrators will thank you

Test Before Events

  • Create a test event to verify columns display correctly
  • Check that rankings and translations produce expected results

Consider Mobile Display

  • Wide recaps may be difficult to read on phones
  • Keep custom column count reasonable

Troubleshooting

Column not appearing

  • Verify Show on Recap is set to Yes
  • Ensure the scoring system was saved after adding the column
  • Check that the position has data to display

Incorrect values

  • Review Multiplier and Divisor settings
  • Verify correct captions/subcaptions are selected
  • Check Calculation type (Sum vs Average, etc.)

Translation not working

  • Ensure Max Value ranges cover all possible scores
  • Verify translations are saved with the column
  • Check for gaps in Max Value ranges

"Custom Columns" tab not visible

  • The tab only appears for existing scoring systems
  • Save the scoring system first, then reopen it
  • Verify you own the scoring system (shared systems show Clone option instead)
