Use Spiel Scripts at Events

After creating spiel scripts, you need to assign them to competitions and then announcers can view them during events. This guide covers both the setup process and the announcer experience.

Assigning Scripts to a Competition

Before your event, assign a spiel script to each group type in your competition.

Steps to Assign Scripts

  1. Navigate to your event
  2. Go to Event Setup (gear icon or Setup menu)
  3. Select the competition you want to configure
  4. Find the Announcer Settings or Announcer Script section
  5. For each group type:
  • Select a script from the dropdown list
  • Only scripts created for that group type are shown
  1. Save your changes

Script Selection Options

Selection Result
A script name That script is used for all groups of this type
None/No selection No spiel sheets available for this group type

When to Assign Scripts

  • During event setup - Assign scripts when configuring your competition
  • Before day-of - Ensure scripts are assigned before announcers need them
  • Different per competition - Each competition can use different scripts

Announcer Experience

Accessing Spiel Sheets

Announcers with event access can view spiel sheets:

  1. Navigate to the event
  2. Select the competition
  3. Go to Announcer > Spiel Sheets

What Announcers See

The Spiel Sheets page displays:

  • Division and round organization - Groups organized by their competition order
  • Individual scripts - Each group's script with all variables replaced
  • Missing data indicators - Red highlighting where variable data is missing

Script Display

Each performance shows:

  • Group name as a header
  • The full spiel script with:
  • Static text as written in the template
  • Dynamic variables replaced with actual group data
  • Missing variables highlighted as: *** No response ***

Click Print to generate a printer-friendly version of all spiel sheets for the competition. This is useful for:

  • Backup if tablets/computers fail
  • Announcers who prefer paper
  • Archival purposes

Variable Replacement

When viewing spiel sheets, all variables are automatically replaced:

Variable Replaced With
Event Name Current event's name
Event Location Current event's location
Group Name Performing group's name
Group Location Group's city/state
Group Division Division they're competing in
Custom fields Data from group's submissions

Handling Missing Data

If a group hasn't submitted data for a variable field:

  • Display: *** No response *** in red text
  • Impact: Announcers can skip that section or improvise
  • Prevention: Ensure groups submit all required data before the event

Best Practices

For Event Setup Staff

  • Assign scripts as part of your event setup checklist
  • Verify assignments before the event date
  • Consider having a backup script for emergencies
  • Test with a few sample groups if possible

For Announcers

  • Review spiel sheets before the event starts
  • Note any groups with missing data
  • Have a plan for handling *** No response *** entries
  • Print backup copies if possible

Troubleshooting

"No spiel sheet configured"

  • A script hasn't been assigned to this competition's group type
  • Ask an admin to assign a script in Event Setup

Variables show *** No response ***

  • The group hasn't submitted data for that field
  • Contact the group to request missing information
  • Announcers can skip or improvise for missing data

Wrong information displayed

  • Data pulls from the group's submissions
  • If incorrect, the group may need to update their submission
  • Contact the group directly or update via admin tools

Script not found in assignment dropdown

  • Scripts only appear for their assigned group type
  • Create a script for the correct group type
  • Or check if the group type is configured for this competition
