Create a Boundary System

This guide walks you through creating a new boundary system for your organization. Boundary systems define performance area limits and the penalties applied when those limits are exceeded.

Before You Begin

Before creating a boundary system, prepare the following:

  1. Boundary Image: A visual diagram of your performance area boundaries
  • Must be exactly 475 pixels wide by 250 pixels tall
  • Accepted formats: PNG, JPG, or GIF
  • Should clearly show boundary lines
  1. Penalty Value: Determine the point deduction for boundary violations

  2. Name: Choose a descriptive name for this boundary configuration

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Access Boundary Systems

  1. Navigate to your organization
  2. Click Settings in the top-right menu
  3. Under Timing & Penalties Setup in the left sidebar, select Boundary Systems

Step 2: Select a Group Type

The Boundary Systems page displays your organization's group types (e.g., Color Guard, Percussion, Winds). Each group type has its own set of boundary systems.

Find the group type you want to add a boundary system to and click the Create a Boundary System button in that panel's header.

Step 3: Configure the Boundary System

A modal window will appear with the following fields:

Name

Enter a descriptive name for this boundary system. Choose something that clearly identifies the boundary configuration.

Examples:

  • "Standard Floor (45x60)"
  • "Competition Tarp"
  • "Stadium Field Boundary"

Penalty

Enter the point value to deduct for each boundary violation. This can be a whole number or decimal.

Examples:

  • 0.5 - Half point per violation
  • 1 - One point per violation
  • 0.1 - Tenth of a point per violation

Layout Image

Upload your boundary diagram:

  1. Click the Upload Boundary Layout button
  2. Select your image file from your computer
  3. Wait for the upload to complete
  4. Verify the image displays correctly in the preview

Important: If your image is not exactly 475x250 pixels, the upload will fail. Resize your image using an image editor before uploading.

Step 4: Save the Boundary System

Once you have filled in all fields and uploaded your layout image:

  1. Verify all information is correct
  2. Click the Save button

Your new boundary system will appear in the list under its group type.

Tips for Creating Boundary Images

Design Guidelines

  • Use high-contrast colors for boundary lines (black lines on white background work well)
  • Include clear labels or measurements if helpful
  • Mark any special zones or areas
  • Keep the image clean and uncluttered

You can create boundary images using:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides (export as PNG)
  • Image editors like Photoshop, GIMP, or Canva
  • Drawing tools like draw.io or Lucidchart

Image Sizing

If your original image is not the correct size:

  1. Open it in an image editor
  2. Resize to exactly 475 pixels wide by 250 pixels tall
  3. Save as PNG, JPG, or GIF
  4. Upload to CompetitionSuite

Troubleshooting

"The image must be 250 tall and 475 wide!!"

Your image dimensions are incorrect. Use an image editor to resize it to exactly 475x250 pixels.

"You can only upload a PNG, GIF, or JPEG!"

The file you selected is not a supported format. Convert your image to PNG, JPG, or GIF and try again.

"You must provide a name!"

The Name field is empty. Enter a descriptive name for your boundary system.

"You must upload a boundary image!"

You haven't uploaded a layout image yet. Click "Upload Boundary Layout" to add your boundary diagram.
