Manually Entering Scores
While scores are typically entered by judges using the tablet app, you may need to manually enter or modify scores in certain situations. This guide explains how to use the Modify Score feature.
When to Use Manual Score Entry
Common scenarios include:
- Paper backup scoring - Entering scores from paper sheets when tablets aren't available
- Score corrections - Fixing errors identified during verification
- Technical issues - Entering scores when a judge's tablet malfunctioned
- Timer/counter adjustments - Modifying timing or penalty values
Opening the Modify Score Modal
- Navigate to the Event Scoring page
- Find the performance you need to modify
- Click the calculator icon in the performance card header
- The Modify Score modal opens, showing the group name and all scorable elements
Modal Layout
The Modify Score modal displays all captions assigned to the performance, organized by judge:
For Each Caption
- Judge Information - Judge initials and full name
- Caption Name - The scoring category (e.g., "Visual", "Music")
- Running Total - Updates as you modify scores
Subcaption Scores
Each subcaption has an input field where you can enter or modify the raw score.
Timers
If the scoring system includes timers:
- Enter time in MM:SS format (e.g., "4:30" for 4 minutes 30 seconds)
- Valid range: 00:00 to 59:59
Counters
If the scoring system includes counters (e.g., penalty counts):
- Enter whole numbers only
- Minimum value is 0
Entering Scores
Subcaption Scores
- Click in the score input field for the subcaption
- Enter the raw score value
- The system automatically validates against the scoring system's min/max values
- An alert appears if the score exceeds the maximum or falls below the minimum
Example: If a subcaption has a maximum score of 10.0, entering "11" triggers an alert and removes the last character entered.
Timer Values
- Click in the timer input field
- Enter time in MM:SS format
- Examples of valid entries:
4:30- 4 minutes, 30 seconds0:45- 45 seconds12:00- 12 minutes exactly
- Invalid formats display an error highlight on the field
Tip: Leading zeros for minutes are optional (both 4:30 and 04:30 are valid).
Counter Values
- Click in the counter input field
- Enter a whole number (0 or greater)
- Decimal values are not accepted
Saving Changes
- Review all entered scores for accuracy
- Click Save to submit the changes
- The modal closes and the performance card updates with the new scores
If any score is invalid (highlighted in red), an alert prompts you to correct the invalid entries before saving.
Canceling Changes
Click Close to exit the modal without saving any changes. All modifications are discarded.
Score Calculations
As you enter scores, the system automatically calculates:
- Subcaption scores - Raw score × multiplier ÷ divisor
- Caption totals - Sum of subcaption scores × caption multiplier ÷ divisor
- Performance total - Sum of caption scores × performance multiplier ÷ divisor + addend
These calculations follow your scoring system configuration.
Important Considerations
Unlocking Before Editing
If a score is locked, you must unlock it before the judge can modify it from their tablet. However, manual entry via the Modify Score modal can update scores regardless of lock status.
Verification Reset
Manually modifying a score may reset its verification status, requiring re-verification through your normal workflow.
Audit Trail
All score modifications are logged. Your organization's administrators can review the history of score changes if needed.
Training Captions
Training captions appear in the modal and can be modified, but they do not affect the official performance score.
Best Practices
- Double-check values - Verify scores against paper backups before saving
- One performance at a time - Complete all modifications for a performance before moving to the next
- Communicate with judges - Notify judges when you've made corrections to their scores
- Document reasons - Keep notes about why manual modifications were necessary
Troubleshooting
Score input not accepting values
Ensure the value meets the min/max requirements of the scoring system. Check the alert message for specific limits.
Timer shows as invalid
Verify you're using MM:SS format. The minutes value must be 0-59 and seconds must be 00-59.
Changes not appearing after save
Wait a moment for the update to process. If the performance card doesn't reflect your changes, refresh the page.
Modal won't open
Ensure the performance exists and has been created in the system. The calculator icon is disabled if there's no scorable data.
